I had a coaching meeting with an excellent manager who is looking to improve the time management and prioritization skills of one of his staff. This manager is “big enough” for his work and is well respected amongst all staff.

During the coaching talk he said, “I’m having a hard time completing my work, because I am constantly trying to figure out when he is going to finish his work.”

That is when the idea struck.

If you cannot predict what employees are doing, you cannot do your work.

On to the Inquiry:

How accurate are your predications?

  • Choose 1 employee who you can predict the quality and time-frame of when they will complete delegated tasks.
  • What do they do that is different?
  • How can you accurately predict their work, quality and completion of tasks?
  • Reflect on your behavior towards that person.
  • Reflect on how much you need that person, for you to be effective.
  • Now, choose an employee that you cannot predict the quality and time-frame of when they will complete delegated tasks.
  • What do they do that is different?
  • Reflect on your behavior towards that person.
  • Reflect on how much you need that person, for you to be effective.
  • What is one small step you can do today, that will increase their predictability?
