There is a false belief that the actions and behaviors we see in the present have always happened, and that they must continue. While problems are important and must be acknowledged, the more effective focus is to determine the solution – what we want to have happen. This happens through a solution focused process of looking for exceptions and finding already existing small steps to take.
If performance metrics are established based upon the “feeling of the manager” then you will achieve misery, anger and fear…which is mutually exclusive of engagement.
Steps to Maintain Team Performance.
Reinforce the hard work of the people, the team, and management;
Slow the team down to examine evidence of progress and setbacks;
Supply the team with concrete steps to work on. Keeping the vagueness to a minimum, making progress on work that is meaningful.
Think about it…what if Teaching Leadership did not exist.
It would require More Than Words. More than words to show you feel that your [leadership] is real ( who doesn’t love a Mr. Big Reference? )
Solution Finding Stimulus.
Behave as-if your solution is happening.
Organizations cannot grow leaders. It is nature or God that grows leaders. All that organizations do is to provide some of the necessary conditions for growth, and chief among them is the opportunity to lead.
The minute you think that no-one has any great ideas or believe that you have to be the hero is when you are blind to your own negative reinforcement of people.
Companies look for a quick fix creating management positions, they really believe will help. When it backfires and creates more problems. They don’t look at what caused the problem, improper organizational design, they throw training at it hoping for more quick fixes.
Working to find the solution that is best. Use resistance and questions as a chance to listen to determine what they want.
