Organization Culture Change and Complexity

The greater your business and you can understand, handle and plan for complexity then the more likely the change that you want to have happen will happen.

Organizational Ethics as a Kingdom of Ends

Within organizations and teams we want everyone to be accountable, capable and have the necessary authority to complete their work. This can only come about through shared respect and reciprocal helping relationships of the team-members and management. Immanuel Kant in his ‘Kingdom of Ends’ formulation supplies a good foundation of thought and actions, in creating this workplace environment.

Authority to decide task assignments

Accountable managers MUST be able to decide what types of task assignments they give to subordinates. They must not be bypassed by their own managers.

If we are to hold a manager accountable for the output of their subordinates the ability to decide delegation and planning of tasks is necessary.

Standardization is the first step to innovation

Without the standard of a Rote-Copying method then Surface Understanding to Personal Mastery, innovation cannot take place. Because we have no standard to measure against and move forward and backwards. The lack of a standard to create small-wins and lead us through rapid PDCA cycles.

Why do we hate smart people?

These are all summed up in a need for opportunities for Self-Development. The challenge is what is said, and what is thought, and what is practices and rewarded are all very different.

Planning Nothing Magical Just Your Work

Within all parts of your work YOUR knowledge and thinking must be part of the plan. No technology or rote process can give you the “correct” plan – BUT a solid process for planning can guide you to the best plan for your team and you.

A plan is a judgment about the best way to go about achieving an intended goal

Communication Loops and Red Tape Worms

* Keep communication simple and with the Manager / Subordinate that have a reciprocal relationship of accountability and authority.
* A manager must be able to add value to the work of immediate subordinates.
* Innovation happens when people can work on tasks with quick and easy feedback from their direct manager.

Realization Prior to Comprehension?

What I mean is that what you think are your values that you can use language to frame the understanding, may happen before you even can have the language to explain what your values are! The awareness occurs before you even can think it.

That brings us to this week inquiry; If the direct awareness of what we value occurs before we can create the language to explain these values; how do we know what we value?
