Camp Inquiry – Young Minds Big Questions

Honored to be part of Camp Inquiry again this year! This year’s Camp Inquiry theme: "Young Minds, Big Questions." Who am I and why am I here? What can I know? What ought I to do? Once the domain of theological and speculative thought, these questions are now increasingly being addressed by the sciences—AND BY … Continued

DiSC Team Building learning activity DiSC Box

The task objective is for groups on the opposite sides to exchange places, with no errors (violations, variations, defects, etc…) in the shortest time possible – while only stepping on the carpet squares when inside the DiSC Box.
The secondary objective is to highlight and reinforce what was learned using the DiSC and how it can be applied / transferred into their lives, teams, organizations, communities.
Engaging people and the team in a situational environment where they are asked to observe their own behaviors and preferences as well as those of the peers.
Connecting the content of a DiSC program to an applicable situation where people can experience, reflect, and process how the team and individuals affect those they work with.

EXTREME Team Building!

There are many things that would bring people together and make great team building if only they weren’t highly inappropriate for a business training context!
This article is a tongue-in-cheek look at some things that would make great build teams exceptionally well but that no training provider would dream of (even in or San Francisco or Brighton – the liberal haven in the Sussex, UK where I live). Each of them also illustrates some serious team development points.

Climbing the walls…develops trust

The students in each class were engaged in experiential initiatives as well as learning simulations to develop trust leading to conflict resolution, leading to pro-social behavior development amongst the students and faculty.
During the in classroom session the students;
Developed accountability practices amongst peers
Enhanced and strengthened trust amongst each other and of their teachers
Learned non-violent techniques for handling conflict – both verbal conflict as well as the threat of physical conflict
Found value in themselves as leaders amongst each other.
Learned about emotional intelligence theory as well as leadership theory in a practical “hands-on” level.
Guided transference of Ropes-Course experience and experiential programming into class room, life, and community applications.

Team Building NEEDS Individual Talents

Team building allow leaders and team members to gain a micro-view of people in situational transactions. When involved in these situational transactions people can see how others and themselves, think, act, handle conflict, handle long and short term delegation of tasks, are able to view the team as a whole, as well as how the individual works and treat others in projects.

This is powerful because rarely is the opportunity given for teams to explore and objectively view a project take place where all team members are present in real-time and are then led through processing and reflection to highlight and explore the strengths of the individuals and the team while involved in work.

Keynote Speech for Professional Development

Provide the staff with skills, tools, and facilitation that will allow them to find strengths within themselves, their department, other departments and Erie Community College as an organization. When exploring these strengths, discussions and process development of existing customer (students, staff, faculty, etc…) and stakeholder (Erie county, vendors, donors, NYS, etc…) interactions will evolve and create increased staff and customer satisfaction and retention.

Eliminating Negative to Increase Positive

I have a flawed and incomplete understanding of what it feels like to work for me.
Because I wield power over others, I am at great risk of acting like an insensitive jerk — and not realizing it.
Bad is stronger than good. It is more important to eliminate the negative than to accentuate the positive.
